Strait transport hub · Updated 11 Aug 2026
2027 total solar eclipse in Algeciras
One of the best logistics-first choices near the Strait: long totality, regional transport and the ability to move toward Tarifa, La Línea or the Atlantic coast if forecasts differ.
Eclipse-day timeline
What happens, and when
Times are local CEST and rounded to the minute for representative city-centre coordinates. Published city durations are cross-checked against IGN where available and Timeanddate; the Explorer/ranking calculate exact coordinates, so nearby points can differ by seconds. At maximum the Sun is roughly ≈38° high at azimuth ≈95° (E).
Weather strategy
Cloud risk and Plan B
Timeanddate reports about 16% historical cloud cover on 2 August since 2000. Strait cloud can be highly local, so the value of Algeciras is mobility: compare both sides of the bay and the Tarifa/Barbate corridor 48–72 hours out.
Getting there
Transport reality
Algeciras is a major road, bus, rail and ferry hub. That makes it unusually flexible, but eclipse-day congestion around the port, N-340 and A-7 can erase that advantage if you move too late.
For a one-off event, optimise for robustness rather than theoretical travel time: arrive early, avoid roadside parking and expect temporary traffic restrictions.
Scout before eclipse day
Candidate viewing areas
These are planning candidates, not official 2027 viewing sites. Capacity, parking and access can change once local authorities publish eclipse-day arrangements.
Getares beach
Broad coastal sky and more room than a compact urban viewpoint. Scout the eastern sightline and parking/access rules before eclipse day.
Parque del Centenario
Elevated coastal context and open views, but capacity is finite; use only if access arrangements make sense for a high-attendance morning.
El Rinconcillo seafront
A practical bay-side option with a wide sky. Local horizon geometry matters, so inspect the exact position in advance.
Stay strategy
Where to stay for Algeciras
Algeciras centre / port
Best for transport connections and an early start without a long drive.
Getares
Useful if you want to stay close to an open coastal viewing candidate.
Tarifa / La Línea alternatives
Use these only as deliberate bases, not as last-minute same-morning switches without a traffic plan.

Sources & methodology
IGN is our official Spanish reference; Timeanddate provides secondary city cross-checks and historical cloud signals. The Explorer/ranking use Astronomy Engine for representative coordinates, so small point-to-point differences are expected.
