A car can be one of the most valuable pieces of an eclipse plan because it keeps multiple viewing bases operational. The goal is not to drive for hours on eclipse morning: sleep close to Plan A and preserve the ability to move only when forecast and access information justify it.

A strong flight gateway for the Costa del Sol. A rental car becomes especially useful when your eclipse fallback moves west beyond the easiest rail corridor.

Jerez Airport
The natural airport for Cádiz Bay. Cádiz itself can support a car-light plan, while a rental car opens the coastal fallback branch toward Conil, Barbate and Tarifa.
SVQ · Inland gateway to Cádiz and the Strait
Seville Airport
Useful when flight choice makes Seville the best arrival point. A rental car can connect the airport directly with an Atlantic eclipse base and preserve flexibility between branches.
GIB · Strait of Gibraltar
Gibraltar Airport / La Línea
A compact gateway for the Strait. Car rental is most useful when the plan spans both the Algeciras/Tarifa branch and the western Costa del Sol.
Long-distance road-trip option
Madrid to southern Spain
Madrid can make sense as the start of a wider Spain road trip, but it is not a tactical eclipse-morning base for the southern totality corridor.

Faro Airport
Faro is worth considering when flight pricing or availability favours Portugal, especially for a road-based trip toward the Atlantic side of the Spanish eclipse corridor.
Four rules for a robust eclipse rental
Sleep inside or very near your preferred eclipse base; the car is a fallback tool, not permission to start far away.
Prefer flexible cancellation and recheck the supplier conditions before travel.
Verify cross-border, one-way, mileage, fuel, driver and insurance terms whenever they matter to your route.
