How to Photograph the 2027 Solar Eclipse Safely
The best eclipse photo plan is the one you can execute without missing the eclipse or damaging your eyes or equipment. Keep the setup simple, practice before 2 August and treat the partial phases and totality as two different photographic situations.
Filter the optics during every partial phase. Remove the filter only for complete totality.
1. The safety rule comes before the camera settings
NASA and the AAS state that cameras, binoculars and telescopes require a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics during the partial phases. Eclipse glasses in front of your eyes do not make an unfiltered telephoto lens safe.
Inside the path of totality, the solar filter can be removed only when the Sun’s bright face is completely covered. It must go back on as soon as bright sunlight reappears.
2. Build two shot modes: partial and totality
During the partial phases the solar filter stays on, and your camera is recording a very bright filtered solar disk. During totality the corona is dramatically fainter, so the photographic problem changes completely.
Instead of inventing exposure values on eclipse morning, save or practice two camera presets beforehand and learn how to switch between them without looking through menus for precious seconds.
3. Practice the physical filter change
The difficult part is often not exposure — it is removing and replacing the front solar filter quickly and securely. The AAS specifically warns that filters for optics must be mounted over the front and stay secure against bumps or wind.
Rehearse the sequence in daylight without pointing at the Sun: filter on → camera mode ready → filter off at totality → totality sequence → filter back on immediately before the bright Sun returns.
4. Keep the equipment plan simpler than your ambition
A stable tripod, remote or timed shutter and a camera you already know are more valuable than unfamiliar gear bought for one morning. Shoot RAW if your workflow supports it and consider exposure bracketing during totality because the corona spans a very wide brightness range.
A wider second camera or smartphone can record the landscape and crowd reaction while a telephoto setup targets the Sun. But only point a camera directly at the partial Sun if that camera has an appropriate front solar filter.
5. Do not spend totality staring at a screen
Totality in Spain lasts from under two minutes in Málaga to nearly five minutes in the longest headline locations. A complicated shot list can consume the experience you traveled for.
Automate what you can, take a short planned sequence and deliberately leave time to look at the corona with your own eyes during complete totality. The photograph is a record; totality is the event.
Solar-filter rule
Do not treat a normal ND filter as an eclipse filter.
For camera lenses, telescopes and binoculars, use a special-purpose solar filter secured over the FRONT aperture. The AAS notes that ISO 12312-2 is a standard for direct-viewing filters, not a certification standard for camera/telescope filters. Buy from a specialist manufacturer or an authorized reseller and follow that maker’s instructions.

High-resolution full-frame body + 400–600 mm class lens + strong tripod/head + scripted/bracketed capture + backup body.
Only makes sense if you already know the system. Totality is a terrible morning to learn a new professional rig.
