2027 total solar eclipse in Conil de la Frontera

A compelling Atlantic alternative to Cádiz: around four minutes of totality, open beaches and a position that keeps both the Cádiz coast and Barbate/Tarifa within a weather-mobility strategy.

Times are local CEST and rounded to the minute for representative city-centre coordinates. Published city durations are cross-checked against IGN where available and Timeanddate; the Explorer/ranking calculate exact coordinates, so nearby points can differ by seconds. At maximum the Sun is roughly ≈38° high at azimuth ≈95° (E).

Weather strategy

Cloud risk and Plan B

Timeanddate reports around 10% historical cloud cover on 2 August since 2000. The Atlantic coast can still develop local low cloud, so use the dry climatology as a baseline rather than a guarantee.

Backup strategy: North toward Chiclana/Cádiz or south toward Barbate/Tarifa. Choose from forecasts before eclipse morning and avoid chasing individual cloud gaps once traffic builds.

Getting there

Transport reality

Conil is primarily road/bus based and has no railway station. The A-48/N-340 approach makes a car useful for weather mobility, but potentially a liability if everyone moves at once.

For a one-off event, optimise for robustness rather than theoretical travel time: arrive early, avoid roadside parking and expect temporary traffic restrictions.

Scout before eclipse day

Candidate viewing areas

These are planning candidates, not official 2027 viewing sites. Capacity, parking and access can change once local authorities publish eclipse-day arrangements.

01

Los Bateles beach

Very broad public beach close to town. High capacity physically, though traffic/parking controls may change that operationally.

02

La Fontanilla

Open coastal sky and easy connection to Conil accommodation; scout exact access and crowd flow.

03

Roche coast

More dispersed coastal options, but avoid cliffs or coves that compromise the eastern horizon and do not rely on informal roadside parking.

Stay strategy

Where to stay for Conil de la Frontera

Conil town

Best if walking to Los Bateles/La Fontanilla is part of the plan.

La Fontanilla / Fuente del Gallo

Closer to open coast and useful for a low-car strategy.

Chiclana / Barbate fallback

Use as preselected alternatives depending on forecast; avoid improvising along the A-48 corridor after dawn.

Sources & methodology

IGN is our official Spanish reference; Timeanddate provides secondary city cross-checks and historical cloud signals. The Explorer/ranking use Astronomy Engine for representative coordinates, so small point-to-point differences are expected.
