You need proper solar eye protection during every partial phase. Totality is brief; the rest of the event requires undamaged viewers from a manufacturer you can verify.

1. What ISO 12312-2 means
It is the international standard used for filters intended for direct solar viewing. A phrase on a commercial listing is not enough on its own: check the manufacturer, product condition and current specialist guidance.
2. How many pairs to buy
For a trip built around a one-off event, spares are cheap insurance. They are tiny and light, and losing or damaging one pair on 2 August can leave someone unable to watch the partial phases.
3. When to remove the glasses
Follow official guidance for your location. Inside the path of totality, unfiltered viewing only applies during the brief interval of complete totality; before and after it, proper protection is required again.
