The ideal eclipse bag is not huge. It simply prevents a small problem from ruining a one-off event.
Think of a long August day with abnormal traffic, possible location changes and services that may be overloaded. This list prioritises the items that reduce the most risk and discomfort.
Quick checklist
- ✓Verified eclipse viewers plus a spare.
- ✓Enough water for several hours and some food.
- ✓Sunscreen, hat and shade where practical.
- ✓Charged power bank and cables.
- ✓Lightweight seat if you will arrive very early.
- ✓Camera gear only if you have already practised the setup.
- ✓Personal medication, a small first-aid pouch and flashlight.
- ✓Offline map, fuel/charge and backup route prepared the day before.

1. Essential: eye safety and water
Proper eclipse viewers and water are the two items you should never depend on finding in stock near the viewing site.
2. Strongly recommended: power, sun protection and food
Your phone will be a navigation, communication, traffic and weather tool. Add sun protection and enough food so you do not need to leave a good viewing location for a basic need.
3. Depending on your plan: seating and photography
If you arrive several hours early, a lightweight seat can be worth carrying. Photography gear only makes sense if it does not steal the experience of totality from you.
