The best setup is not the most complicated one. It is the setup you can prepare in advance without spending totality fighting menus, focus and framing.
Quick checklist
- ✓Use a suitable front-mounted solar filter during the partial phases.
- ✓Do not improvise with normal ND filters, smoked glass or homemade substitutes.
- ✓Test focus, framing and remote triggering days in advance.

1. The solar filter goes in front of the lens
During the partial phases, an appropriate solar filter should reduce sunlight before it enters the optical system. The exact product depends on your lens diameter and setup; always follow the filter manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Tripod, focus and remote shutter
A stable frame lets you rehearse in advance. A remote shutter or timer reduces camera handling and makes it easier to experience the eclipse rather than spending the whole event behind the camera.
3. Power is part of the camera kit
Video, screens, GPS and a long session can consume a lot of power. Carry charged batteries and, if your camera supports USB-C power, a compatible power bank can be a useful backup.
